There are two goals for treating a migraine:
- To provide relief of pain and other symptoms once a migraine attack has started. This is known as abortive treatment.
- To reduce the chance or number of future attacks. This is called preventive therapy.
If you suffer from migraines you doctor will probably address both goals in your treatment plan.
Abortive treatment
To help relieve pain, the doctor may recommend prescription and over-the-counter pain relievers (analgesics). There are also specific antimigraine medicines that might be prescribed.
Preventive therapy
Medication for preventing migraines includes a number of options. Please see your doctor to discuss treatment alternatives.
Additional approaches
Besides medications, doctors sometimes recommend relaxation techniques, biofeedback, exercise, hot/cold compresses, and special diets.
Depakote and Depakote ER are indicated for prophylaxis (prevention) of migraine headaches in adults.
