Learn About Depakote ER

Know the Different Types of Depakote Dosage Forms

There are three different types of Depakote. Depakote ER, Depakote and Depakote Sprinkles. They are all used for treating epilepsy for adults and children 10 years of age and older. Specifically they are approved to treat the following types of epileptic seizures:

  • Complex partial seizures
  • Simple absence seizures
  • Complex absence seizures

The Difference Between Depakote ER and Depakote

The "ER" in Depakote ER stands for Extended Release. Depakote ER contains the same ingredients as Depakote but it is designed to slowly deliver the right amount of medication over a 24-hour period. That means that Depakote ER only has to be taken once a day. Once-a-day medications are usually easier to remember to take and less of a hassle than medications you have to take two or more times a day. If you have been prescribed Depakote ask your doctor if Depakote ER is right for you.

When to Ask for Depakote Sprinkles

Depakote Sprinkles are available in capsules that can be pulled apart to sprinkle the medication over food. Ask the doctor for this formulation if your child has a hard time swallowing pills. The medication inside the capsule is contained in coated beads so there is no taste.
