Know what your medication looks like
If you ever get tablets that look different (different color, different markings) than these for Depakote ER or Depakote (divalproex sodium delayed-release tablets), contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Packaging
Whether your Depakote ER medication comes from your physician as a sample (pictured below) or from the pharmacy it should say the brand name Depakote ER. If you've been taking Depakote ER and the label on the box or pharmacy bottle says Depakote only, you may want to double check with your doctor. Also, if the label on the pharmacy bottle only lists a generic name you should point that out to your doctor or pharmacist.
Tablets
Depakote ER tablets are available in the following two dosages:
500 mg-gray-colored tablets embossed with Abbott "a"and "HC"
Depakote tablets are available in the following three dosages:
Currently there is no approved generic that can be substituted for Depakote ER or Depakote. If you receive tablets from the pharmacy that look different (different color, shape, size or markings) contact your doctor. The decision for using a generic should be between you and your doctor and pharmacist.
